Who Are/ Benefits Of The BSKI

The BSKI- British Shotokan Kyogi International - was established in 1988 as a democratic and non-profit making organisation for the development of Shotokan Karate and is affiliated to European and World Shotokan Karate Bodies. We therefore offer you the opportunity to contribute by being part of a non-political, sincere organisation, with solid traditional values.

The aim of the BSKI, as previously stated, is to combine the philosophy of Master Gichin Funakoshi with the karate teachings of Shihan Masatoshi Nakayama. All BSKI senior instructors continue to train under the best of today's Japanese and western teachers in Shotokan karate, a situation which is open to the BSKI membership. We adhere strictly in our teaching to the Kihon and kata as originally taught by Nakayama Sensei and incorporate and utilise the bunkai to reflect this. We are involved with an extensive network of foreign karate-ka in over 50 countries whose aims, objectives and standards are deemed similar to our own and as such we welcome a liaison with any serious martial artist or group with similar values. The BSKI is by far one of the largest and most successful single-style associations based in Great Britain who’s many benefits, including the following:

The costs of training with the BSKI

The BSKI club fees equate well compared to many other karate groups and in fact also to compared to other sports and hobbies . However  all instructors/students need to purchase an annual BSKI licence and insurance which is placed in the  BSKI Membership book and acts as a grading and course record. As part of the insurance fee, free instructor’s professional indemnity insurance to cover the first 6 hours of training, is in place. However, we do recommend that you take out a further policy giving a cover for 2 million ponds sterling, an invaluable asset in today’s world of litigation.

Instructors within the BSKI

All BSKI clubs are under the instruction of BSKI qualified Black Belts who are both nationally and internationally recognised. They are provided with the opportunity to attend numerous free training courses dealing with all aspects of Karate,  first-aid, dojo administration, instruction skills (for all levels and ages), health sciences (nutrition, anatomy/exercise physiology. BSKI standards are maintained through the auspices of the BSKI Technical Committee whose members have trained in traditional Shotokan karate for many years and currently range from 5th to 7th Dan.

The benefits of training in Shotokan Karate

The BSKI believes that the aerobic style of exercise required in attaining a high level of skill in Shotokan karate promotes health, fitness and a feeling of well-being, which is supported by current research. Karate training, by its nature also helps build confidence in an individual. The ‘Dojo Kun’ , or training code, is strictly adhered to by BSKI members ensuring discipline in the dojo, and along with Gichin Funakoshi’s  20 precepts, offers a life style guide for the karateka to follow.

Training in BSKI Dojo's?

BSKI training is structured into three main sections - Kihon (fundamental techniques), Kata (formal exercises) and Kumite (sparring) all based on the principles of Sensei Gichin Funakoshi and Shihan Masatoshi Nakayama. Each area progresses in difficulty to suit the different grades of the karateka. Kumite will slowly be introduced in a controlled setting, progressing to free-sparring as training and experience dictate. This allows the development of timing, improved reflexes and co-ordination which are requirements for tournaments and the self defence element of the art
