BSKI Grading's
All BSKI students are entitled to
take grading examinations after set periods of training.
In the BSKI, with respect
to full members, instructors
holding a first Dan may grade up to 4th Kyu; 2nd Dan and above may
grade up to 1st Kyu. For associate
membership, those not wishing to hold or take BSKI Dan
grades, instructors may grade to two grades below their own grade if 3rd
Dan (Sandan) or above. For full members,
we have a set association grading syllabus which we expect you to adhere to. As
the BSKI has both international as well as national recognition with a
reputation of playing a major role in traditional Shotokan training worldwide,
we also offer regular courses to ensure that a high national standard is
maintained. There are 9
grades below Black Belt (Shodan), called Kyu grades, 9th Kyu, orange belt, the
lowest and 1st Kyu, brown and 2x white, being the highest.
Achieving a BSKI Black Belt
There are 10 levels of Black belt or Dan grades,
starting at 1st Dan. Students can usually achieve 1st Dan (Shodan) standard in 3
to 4 years but only with regular training and instruction. It then takes a
minimum of 2 more years to achieve 2nd Dan (Nidan), 3 years to 3rd Dan (Sandan)
etc as per the EKGB
mandate of 1992. This means that
that all Technical Committee members being 5th Dan
(Godan) and above, will have at least 20 years Karate experience.
Dan grading's, for those in full membership,
are conducted by the association’s chief instructor sensei Charles Gidley 7th
Dan at your own dojo by arrangement or at one of the many courses held
nationally or internationally by the association. These grades carry full
international accreditation and recognition. As long as you can provide bone
fide certificates from your previous association, current Dan grades will be
honoured. Please note that instructors from newly joining groups or dojo's
wishing to grade with the BSKI, must be with us for a period of not less than 6
months and must have the approval of the chief instructor
